NDIS Transition Leaving People With Severe Mental Illness Behind

A report recently released by Community Mental Health Australia (CMHA) highlights some of the difficulties and barriers which are being experienced by people with a psychosocial disability in applying for the NDIS.

MHACA is one of two organisations in the Northern Territory that have contributed data to the research being conducted by CMHA in conjunction with University of Sydney. Our experience of the transition process is consistent with national trends, which suggest that a lower than expected proportion of people with psychosocial disability are being accepted on to the scheme.

MHACA is seeking an experienced Housing and Homelessness Support Worker to assist people living with mental health challenges who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to access and maintain safe and secure accommodation.

The role provides practical, strengths-based support through advocacy, case management, financial planning, living skills education and referrals to other services. The successful candidate will work with participants to identify their goals, develop support plans and address psychosocial barriers to maintaining stable housing.

We are looking for someone with experience in complex case management, an understanding of tenancy management and the homelessness sector, and the ability to build effective relationships with participants and stakeholders. Experience working in a cross-cultural setting or a demonstrated understanding of cultural safety and cultural competence is essential.

Full time and ongoing – 38 hours per week.

Salary $93,201.99 – $100,286.94 (MHACA EBA/SCHADS Level 4) plus 12% super and generous salary sacrifice.

MHACA also offers six weeks annual leave, 11 days personal leave, a $400 annual Wellbeing Allowance, professional development opportunities and flexible, family-friendly workplace policies.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to apply, and transferable skills will be considered.
