Schizophrenia Awareness Week 17-24 May

Schizophrenia is a common mental health condition which affects the way people think, feel and behave. Up to one in a 100 people experience schizophrenia worldwide, and it often develops between the late teenage years until the early 30’s but can occur at any time.

There is a lot of stigma associated with schizophrenia which is often based on false perceptions. Schizophrenia is treatable, and with the right supports people can lead full and meaningful lives.

The theme for Schizophrenia Awareness Week (SAW) 2020 is ‘Stay Connected’, which is incredibly important for people with mental health issues, particularly in the current times. Staying connected to family and friends, mental health support teams and community supports help manage the challenges of the condition.

Hearing Voices is a safe and understanding support group for voice hearers or people with intrusive thoughts which runs weekly at MHACA. The group explores a range of support strategies and provides participants with a safe space to talk about their experiences.

MHACA supports people with a range of mental health conditions, including schizophrenia.

People must have a diagnosed mental health condition to access MHACA services but are able to self-refer.
