Mental Health Week – Promoting Wellbeing

Mental Health Week was held in the Northern Territory between 8-16 October with the theme being Awareness, Connection and Belonging.

50 people enjoyed the Mental Health Morning Tea today on Tuesday 11 October at Yaye’s Cafe. A big thankyou to headspace Alice Springs and Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia NT for bringing mental health information to share, Mayor Matt Paterson and Darren Riggon (Child Youth Mental Health Team) for speaking, Xavia for the beautiful music, Yaye’s Cafe for hosting and Kumalie Kngwarraye for your Welcome to Country and thoughtful words.

Thankyou to the Alice Springs Aquatic and Leisure Centre and the Alice Springs Town Council Healthy Communities Program for partnering in Wednesdays Fun at the Pool event for Mental Health Week. People enjoyed an aqua exercise class, a swim and a shared healthy lunch afterwards. A big thankyou to Lucinda for instructing the class.

Thankyou to the Purple House for partnering with MHACA to host two bush balm demonstrations as part of Mental Health Week. Community members and MHACA participants had the opportunity to learn how the balms are made. Indigenous Australians have used native plants to treat illness for generations. This traditional knowledge inspires the creation of a range of Bush Balm® products made from wild harvested medicinal plants expertly collected on Aboriginal Lands in Central Australia. More than 400 people enjoyed the beautiful weather and learnt more about how to support mental health and wellbeing at Stress Less in the Park. 21 local organisations hosted stalls and shared information about the support services community members can access. A special thankyou to Kumalie Kngwarraye for the Welcome to Country, Mayor Matt Paterson, Bambadino, Stuart Nuggett, Katanga Junior, Alice Springs Reptile Centre, Arrernte Community Boxing Academy, and Shae and Coco for the massages. Stress Less in the Park is the feature event of Mental Health Week and is organised by MHACA, with the support of the Northern Territory PHN and Alice Springs Town Council.
